Psalm 1:1-2 (niv)
1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers,
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1 speaks of two ways of life with two very different end results. The blessed and the wicked. The wicked deliberately “walk” a life opposed to the law of the Lord. They “stand” in allegiance with the sinners- those in rebellion against the law of the Lord. They “sit” in relationship with those who mock the Lord and His word, scorning and ridiculing it (v1).
If you wanted to use the lockdown idea: the wicked literally locked themselves down from a relationship with the Lord. This lack of relationship with the Lord leads to their lives being like “chaff that the wind blows away” (v4). No good thing, that is approved by God, can come from it.

In contrast the blessed man delights and meditates on the law of the Lord. He “walks” in the Lord’s counsel, “stands” in allegiance with those who submit to Jesus and His word. Their lives are directed by God’s Word. They “sit” in relationship with the Lord and His people. This is the opposite to a lockdown.
The blessed way of life leads to life eternal. Life for those who walk, sit and stand on His Words, who delight in Him and meditate on His Word day and night. The blessed man is like a beautiful tree that is rooted in the Lord and His Word, always green and bearing the fruit that the Lord prepared long in advance for us to do because the Lord watches over his “ways of righteousness” (v6).

Let us take great comfort in our Lord Jesus and His word. Let us read and delight in it. Let us meditate on it and think about what it means for us today. Let us be ruled by His word and be bearing the fruit it calls us to bear in this lockdown “day”. in the words of Psalm 2:12 -Blessed is the man who takes refuge in the Lord.

Prayer points

• Thank the Lord for His Word
• Ask the Lord to help you read it, delight in it and spend time meditating on it
• Ask the Lord to grow each one of us into a tree that bears the fruit He has prepared for us to bear
